1914 to Present Day

  • War Measures Act

    The War Measures Act was instated and gave the Canadian government control over many aspects of Canadian life. The law led to the arrests of immigrants who were suspected of being enemies of the country, mainly German and Austria/Hungary immigrants.
  • Start of World War 1

    World War 1 began when Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated by a member of the Black Hand, a terrorist group who fought to unite Bosnia with Serbia.
  • Canada's Involvement in The War

    Canada helped during the war by giving their own troops to help the cause, with 650,000 troops being deployed, with 6,000 being First Nations soldiers. Canada also supplied the war effort by having women work in factories in 1917, which then led to Enfranchisement and women fighting for the right to vote, along with victory gardens being planted to create more rations for troops. Canada also helped fund the war through victory bonds and taking high interest loans from companies.

    After The War

    The Spanish flu, bootlegging, and the Winnipeg general strike were all issues that arose after the war.
  • The End of the War

    During the Last Hundred Days of the war, the allies pushed through Germans lines and with the support of tanks and aircraft managed to push 130km and reach the German border, causing the end of the war.
  • Treaty of Versailles

    The treaty was signed by Germany and the allies to formally end world war 1. The treaty demanded that Germany pay for all damages and also tried to ensure that Germany would be crippled and could never rise back to power.

    The Great Depression

    This era was the great depression that left Canada in an economic deficit after world war 1, it ended at the start of world war 2.
  • Adolf Hitler's Rise to Power.

    Adolf Hitler took full control of Germany after promising the people of the country freedom from the restrictions brought on by the treaty of Versailles.

    World War 2

    World War 2 began after Germany invaded Poland without a formal declaration of war. This then led to the allied countries sending an ultimatum to Germany to withdrawal from Poland.

    The Final Solution

    This was the time period when Germany began mass killing European-Jews within deathcamps, with Auschwitz Birkenau being the biggest one of all. The Germans also tried to cover everything up when the war began to end by burning bodies, buildings, documents, and witnesses.

    Baby Boom

    The Baby Boom was a mass increase in population due to many husbands returning home from Europe and having children with their wives. People born during this era are called Baby Boomers.
  • United Nations

    Over 50 country representatives come together to form the United Nations to ensure that conflicts like World War 2 can and will be prevented.

    The Post War Era

    This was a time of high economy, high employment rates, high wages, and a booming industrial industry. Construction also exploded during this era due to the mass amounts of new families thanks to the Baby Boom, resulting in the Suburbs. Cars were also made much more popular during this time and so was the TV that heavily influenced consumerism.
  • Truman Doctrine

    The Truman Doctrine was instated to offer support to any countries resisting communism and to in turn contain it.

    Berlin Airlift

    The US and British planes dropped food and supplies to West Berlin that was blocked off by the Berlin Blockade which led to Stalin giving up on the blockade.
  • The Cold War

    After the Axis was defeated in World War 2, a conflict in political ideology brewed and eventually caused the US and the Soviets to hold positions in countries they had liberated during the war to spread their way of government. Winston Churchill had famously called this separation of east and west Europe, the Iron Curtain.
  • NATO and The Warsaw Pact

    NATO was the group of Capitalist countries that were formed after the Berlin Blockade and the Soviets dropping their first atomic bomb. The Soviets in turn made the Warsaw Pact of communist countries located in the Iron Curtain.

    The Korean War

    The Korean war was caused by the invasion of South Korean, who was liberated by the US, from North Korean, who was liberated by the Soviets. The Canadians helped the US in fighting back the North Korean's and eventually creating the Korean Armistice Agreement which put the war on pause.
  • The Cuban Missile Crisis.

    This was a thirteen day standoff that was perpetrated by the instalment of Soviet nuclear weapons in Cuba, the US responded by creating a naval blockade to stop more missiles from being imported in. Eventually, the US and Soviet leaders came to an agreement that the Missiles would be taken out of Cuba as long as the US promised to not invade the island.
  • The Gulf War

    During this time, Saddam Hussein had invaded Kuwait and the UN in turn responded by authorizing the use of military force against Iraq. This invasion from many different regiments of UN troops led to Iraq surrendering, Saddam Hussein was then required to destroy all of his biological weapons that he had been stockpiling. Canada was a part of the UN invasion of Iraq.
