1920's Prohibition

  • States Ratify the 16th Amendment

    Passed by Congress in 1909 to establish federal income tax that will reduce the governments need to rely on revenue by taxing the alcohol industry
  • Rotary Club of Pittsburgh Calls for temporary Prohibition of alcohol

    They wanted a temporary Prohibition of alcohol during WWI because they wanted to preserve wheat, corn, rye, that was barely used used by distillers and brewers for the war effort.
  • Congress Passes the 18th Amendment

    This amendment would restrict the manufacture and sale of alcohol. States were given 7 years to ratify the amendment.
  • The 18th Amendment is Ratified

    The amendment was ratified when Nebraska became the 36th state to bar the "manufacture, sale or transportation of beverage purposes", 46 out of the 48 state eventually supported the prohibition. Connecticut and Rhode Island were the only state to hold out.
  • Congress Passes the 19th Amendment

    The 19th amendment was passed to to give women the right to vote
  • Wartime Prohibition Act Takes Effect

    It restricts the sale of beverages obtaining more than 2.75% of alcohol
  • Congress Overrides President Woodrow Wilson's Veto of the National Prohibition Act

    Called the Volstead Act makes it illegal to manufacture beverages with more than half-percent of of alcohol and provide enforcement of the 18th amendment

  • The Wall Street Crash Starts

    Begins to usher in the Great Depression
  • Franklin Roosevelt is Elected President

    After campaigning among the other things, to end the Prohibition Franklin Roosevelt is elected president
