1960s and public protests

  • Greensboro

    four African American students sat down at a segretaded lunch table. when they rufesed to move people got upset. this encouraged many people to take action against segregation and many people did sit ins and marches.
  • freedom rides

    activists rode insterstate buses into the segregated sates to challenge supreme court decisions. this brought people to think about the issues and to try and help fix them
  • March on washington

    this was a massive protest for jobs and freedom. this brought national attenton to the civil rights movement. This also influenced the passage to voting rights
  • cuban missile crisis

    the US discovered nuclear missiles in Cuba. kennedy ordered a naval block to prevent further missile shipments. this caused widespread fear and anxiety.
  • civil rights

    people were trying to give African American their rights by protesting. it made segregation illegal in schools and public places. they also gained the right to vote and to get jobs and many other things. it also had a big effect on beliefs about race.
  • voting rights

    it outlawed discrimitory voting practices such as literacy tests. People also had to get voting registration. with greater access to ballot boxes African Americans turned out to have larger votes. this all lead to many changes in policies.
  • anit-vietnam war protests

    many people didn't like the war on moral grounds, saying how the US had no right to interfere. the many deaths on women and children caused people to be really mad. the protests raised public awareness about the war and how to effected everyone. the protests put pressure on the government.
  • assassination on martin Luther king jr

    He was a symbol of hope and justice so when he was killed everyone was mad. people started throwing riots and protesting. he was a big part in the civil rights movement and now that he was dead everything shifted. but his teachings still carry on today.
  • Woodstock music festival

    this was a music festival that drew over 400,000 people to it. it had a lasting impact on music, culture, and society. it had lots of influence on many future music festivals
  • stonewall riots

    these were riots the was for LGBTQ people and them trying to get more rights. The riots showed people all the issues they were having and how they needed to be fixed. these riots helped pave the way for what they have now.
