Austria Hungary declared war on Serbia so many countries became automatically involved due to various agreements- Canada didn’t declare entry into the war as it was assumed they’d become involved in support of Britain, this wasn’t received well by French Canadians, who didn’t support the war and felt they shouldn’t have to fight!November 11, 1918 the war ended, ending the deadliest conflict in history with at least 10 millions combatants and civilian casualties, which lead to remembrance day! -

Winnipeg General Strike
Workers protested because of inflation, the widening gap between rich-working classes, low wages, rights, safe conditions and shorter hours! With the strike everything was shut down and Winnipeg became a very divided nation, Mounted troops charged into protesters causing many casualties, then when workers returned to their jobs and experienced minimal changes, June 21st became known as Bloody Saturday, and although they lost the battle of 1919 their idea won public opinion over time! -

The fight lasted about 8 days, Canadian casualties reached 2265 with 484 in the Devil's Brigade, the first special force. The FSSF had 1 year of hardcore training - training in hand to hand combat and Canadian American and German Artillery. -

It was a political conflict which meant the war against the US and USSR never actually happened directly but with proxy wars- Both sides created global alliance systems - NATO - (allied with Americans) and Warsaw (allied with soviets) Although Canada wasn’t as much of a major power, we still have many structures and emergency fallout bunkers around today as a result such as the one I had ended up visiting in Ottawa in grade 8! -

The Suez Crisis
Egypt took full control of the suez canal, the suez canal was a very important trade route to countries such as America and Britain, so when Egypt put tariffs in place countries were quite displeased and threatened to bomb Egypt over it! However the rising conflict was essentially single handedly resolved by Lester B. Pearson dissolving the tension, basically saving the world! This was important for Lester B. Pearson and Canada when Lester Pearson earned the first Canadian Nobel Peace Prize! -
Pierre Eliot Trudeau Becomes President
Lester B. Pearson steps down, with his successor Pierre Eliot Trudeau taking his place! Many people really liked Trudeau as he had lots of charisma hung out with celebrities, a cool car and a pretty laid back attitude for a politician people liked him so much it caused a sensation called "Trudeaumania"! -
Summit Series
A hockey game between Canada and the USSR to see who was the best at hockey- because Canada hadn’t been in international hockey as a form of protest since 1963, allowing the soviets to dominate the olympics. Each side desperately wanted to show that their country and way of life was the best! The game was so important for Canada that everything stopped business, school work... in the end Canada won by one goal- afterwards people stated that it was like this sigh of relief from all the tension. -

The Somalia Crisis
A somalian teengaer was found near a canadian encampment and was tortured and beaten to death in the night. At first, a military inquiry found that only a few low-ranking soldiers had committed the racist crime, but as more evidence came through it became clear that there had been a high level attempt to cover up this incident- instead of admission of their wrongdoings. This deed topped with the attempt to hide it tainted Canada’s reputation.
