9/11
On September 11, 2001, terrorists hijacked four planes, crashing two into the World Trade Center Twin Towers, one into the Pentagon, and one into a field. This event changed the way the world looked at its safety and resulted in thousands of deaths. National security was greatly increased, and different countries supported the US in invading those who performed the attacks.

Iraq War
The Iraq War came from the United States believing that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction and terrorist ties. Claims of these were found to be false later on. This came soon after 9/11, and the US was very on guard. The credibility of the United States was damaged after this because of the lack of weapons of mass destruction found.

Global Financial Crisis
In 2008, the United States underwent a major economic depression. The housing market crashed, leading to a rise in home prices, and economic difficulties. This was significant as it was one of the biggest economic issues since the Great Depression.

Obama
Barack Obama became the 44th president of the United States and the first African American president. He pushed for changes, especially in the healthcare field, and created Obamacare, pushing for affordable healthcare for all. He was a significant figure in how he conducted his presidency and as the first African-American president.

Black Lives Matter
The Black Lives Matter movement took place starting in 2013. This is one of many movements that began in the 21 century. It's main focus was on police brutality and racial inequality. Many protests, parades, riots, and more arose with this movement. It highlighted that there is still a ways for America to go to have true equality for all.
