The Armenian Genocide
The Ottoman Empire began a systematic and intentional massacre of the Armenian population ordered by sultan Abdul Hamid II, that ultimately led to the overwhelming death of over 1.5 million people. -
The Ukrainian Famine
Stalin, aiming to crush and demolish Ukrainian nationalism increased Ukraine's grain procurement quota by 44%. Because Soviet law stated that no ailments must be given to civilians until the quota was met, the horrifying deterioration of the Ukrainian population commenced. Peasants of all ages were starved until a grueling death was met. The death toll was between 6-7 million. -
Rape of Nanking
The Japanese Imperial Army took over Nanking during the period of World War II, and began the blind slaughter of the Chinese population. Sadistic "games" including the decapitation of humans, and the barbaric mutilation of civilians thus ensued. 300,000 were murdered, while more than 200,000 women aged 7- 70 were both raped and tortured. And to think that these horrendous atrocities were met with smiling faces on the part of the Japanese soldiers. -

The Cambodian Genocide
Under Pol Pot's rule, the khmer rouge embarked on their ruthless extremist campaign; to cleanse Cambodia, thus leading to the execution of Vietnamese and Chinese nationals, Muslims, and Buddhist monks. Anyone and everyone who rebelled were instantly executed regardless of age, ethnicity etc. Approximately 1.7 million were murdered. -
Iraq
The brutality of dictator Saddam Hussein is displayed through his genocidal acts towards the Kurds in Iraq. Through "Operation Al-Anfal", he ordered the mass extermination of the Kurdish population, believing that they were a problem to his regime. He used everything from chemical weapons, to mines in order to implement his "ultimate solution". -
The Genocide of Bosnia
Bosnian Serb forces in Srebrenica led by Momcilo Krajisnik committed genocide by seeking to eliminate Bosnian Muslims. 8000-9000 were murdered before the US under new President, Bill Clinton intervened. A NATO- imposed ceasefire was finally declared. -
Start of the Rwandan Genocide
Canadian General, Romeo Dallaire knew something was amiss during the civil war between Hutus and Tutsis. Even after his discovery of ammunition and weapons located in Kigali, he was unable to seize them as this would violate the UN mandate. The UN Security Council's refusal for logistical support and reinforcements led to one of the most barbaric 100 days in the history of mankind. -

At the end of 100 days, over 800,000 Tutsi civilians had been brutally slaughtered by Hutus that may have been anything from life-long neighbours to friends. -
The Darfur Genocide
In order to suppress rebel groups in Sudan, the Sudanese government recruited nomadic Arab tribes now known as the "janjaweed" to form militia. Unfortunately, this irregular military force have begun slaughtering thousands of innocent black African civilians. Without a resolution in sight, when will this crisis finally end?
