French and Indian War
France and Britain were fighting for control of the Ohio River Valley in North America. Great Britain ends up winning, but they go into a massive debt. To pay off the debt, they start to heavily tax the colonists. This creates the first bit of tension between the colonists and the crown. -
The Stamp Act
The stamp act made the colonists pay a tax made in given in the form of a stamp. It could be on papers, documents, or playing cards. It was made by the British government and the colonial legislatures didn't approve it. You could only pay in British sterling and that was hard to get. If you violated a rule of the stamp act you could go to court. -
Boston Massacre
The Boston Massacre was in Great Britain and was an incident in Boston that happened on March 5, 1770. 9 British soldiers shot a couple of people of three or four hundred who were shouting at and throwing lots of things at them. It created even more tension between the two groups. -
The Boston Tea Party and Intolerable Acts
There were a series of laws passed by the British Parliament. They did this because a group of colonists poured a bunch of valuable tea into the sea. This made the colonists create more resistance. -
The Battle of Bunker Hill
American patriots were eventually defeated at the Battle of Bunker Hill, but they fought a good fight against the British Army. This fight had made it clear that no alliances could be formed from this point on. -
The Townshend Acts
The Townshend Acts were something that made people pay taxes to help pay for governing colonies. It was passed by the parliament. It taxed items like glass, paper, tea, and more. This raised the price of tea and negatively impacted colonial shipping companies. -
Battles of Trenton and Princeton
During the American Revolution, a series of engagements were eventually won by the Continental Army against the Hessian and the British in New Jersey. The battles were fought for a whole nine days and were considered the first successes won by George Washington. The victories helped people's general happiness. -
Battle of Saratoga
One of the most decisive American battles of the Revolutionary War, Saratoga ended British general John Burgoyne's attempt to control the Hudson River Valley. The outcome convinced the Court of King Louis XVI that the Americans could hold their own against the British Army, sealing the alliance between America and France. American general Benedict Arnold was hailed as a hero for his bravery on the battlefield, a reputation lost with his later betrayal and defection to the Royalists. -
Valley Forge
Lieutenant Colonel Alexander Hamilton and Captain Henry Lee tried to stop the British, but they failed. Two Continental Army officers decided to try and get the supplies at Valley Forge away, but the British soldiers took their supplies, destroyed other people, and burned down forges and buildings
