During the middle ages purses were very common for both men and women. These purses were very small and were used to only carry coins. -

In the 18th Century fashion changed a lot and purses had to be re-invented. Women started to wear relicules. -

The first modern day purse was made by Samuel Parkinson. Parkinson one day was traveling with his wife and saw that his wife's purse was too small to fit anything in there so as result he ordered for several bags of different sizes to be made. -
Modern Day Purses
Handbags evolved significantly. Many designs we see today were invented during this time such as the handbag, satchel, and clutch. Companies like Chanel and Louis Vuitton were beginning to get a big name.
