Britain declares war on germany (WW1)
with the assassination of the Archduke Franz Ferdinand, countries start declaring war on each other because of alliances that were made. due to canada still being heavily tied to britain, we were forced to join the war. this is the start of the great war... -
No.2 construction battalion authorized
the No.2 construction battalion was the largest black unit in Canadian history. it was a labour battalion, which was tasked with improving roads, maintaining the water and electrical systems, and transporting finished wood products. -
The Battle of the Somme (End)
The Battle of the Somme is considered the bloodiest battle of the first world war. the battle had around 600,000 allied casualties with little significant gain in the battle, making it a basically pointless battle. Canada joined the battle august 30th and participated in a number of bloody attacks. Canada helped capture the regina trench, ending the battle. -
wartime elections act passed
the wartime elections act gave Female relatives of canadian soldiers the right to vote, but also took away the right to vote from "enemy aliens". the purpose of the election was if people wanted conscription or not, if people voted for borden there would be conscription if not then no conscription. -
Battle of Passchendaele (End)
The battle of Passchendaele is the Muddiest battle of the first world war, that serves as a symbol of the madness and futility of WW1. The conditions of the battle were terrible, as the entirety of no mans land was a muddy mess with deep shell holes filled with water, and trenches flooded. Canada was involved in this, as they were ordered to attack the german occupied city of lens, but instead we decided to seize the high ground beside it. we did in fact seize the high ground. -
League of Nations
The League of Nations was an organization established in 1920 with the aim of collective security. the league of nations failed that aim due to Lack of enforcement due to poor military status, countries joining late, and countries leaving. This is significant to Canada because we were a founding country, and this was the first peacekeeping organization we joined independently. -
Holocaust (First Concentration camp opens)
the Holocaust was the systematic persecution and genocide of 6 million Jews and 5 million non Jews by the Nazis. Jews didn't experience the Holocaust directly in canada, but they still experienced anti-semitism here. however Canada played a huge role in the liberation of the Nazi camps in the Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany. -
Dieppe Raid (End)
The Dieppe Raid was a test of the Allies ability to attack Nazi occupied europe and gain a foothold, through naval assault. this battle went horribly wrong, and served as a lesson for future naval assaults such as D-Day. This was also Canada's first real military engagement in WW2. -
Cree code talkers
the cree code talkers were an elite unit tasked with creating a code system based on the cree language, to relay classified information without the enemy knowing what they were saying. this is significant to Canada because they were stationed in Canada, and the axis were not able to crack the code. -
D-Day (end)
D-Day was the invasion of the beaches of normandy to try to give the allies a foothold into nazi occupied Europe. this battle is significant to Canada because out of the allied forces, we made it the farthest into Normandy. we also completed one of our objectives with relative ease compared to the rest of the allied forces.
