Executive order 9981: Desegregated armed forces, mostly the military -
Start of Korean War
This event was not directly apart of any rights act, but it had significantly put to use the act of 9981 that President Truman signed in 1948. -
Brown vs Board of education
A Supreme Court case that declared state laws that segregated public schools for black and white students to be unconstitutional. This also overturned the Plessy vs Ferguson “separate but equal”(1896) -
Montgomery bus boycott
A 381 day protest that went against segregation of public transit in Montgomery, Alabama. This was sparked up by Rosa Parks refusing to give up a seat on her bus to a white man. -

Nine African American students that were enrolled at central high school in Little Rock, Arkansas, going against the states laws. Daisy Bates was a civil rights activist who played a crucial role in helping the Little Rock nine and navigating them through resistance they faced. -
Greensboro lunch counter sit-in
4 African American college students staged a sit in at a segregated diner in Greensboro, North Carolina. This initiated a wave of similar protests all across the south and this helped to desegregate diners. -

A massive march of people who marched to Washington, D.C., where MLK delivers his famous “ I have a Dream” speech -
Civil Rights act
This aimed to end all segregation in public places. It also worked to uplift any ban on basis of race, sex, and religion -
Jim Crow law
This year was the end of Jim Crow laws, which was a system that held up racial segregation in the south. The civil rights act of 1964 and the voting rights act of 1965 helped to end this law -
Voting rights act
This act aimed to end racial discrimination in voting. This act also banned the use of literacy tests and any other practices that had been used to disqualify African Americans from voting -
Black panther party
Created in Oakland, CA, by Huey Newton and Bobby Seale. The black panther party was made to go against police brutality against African Americans. -
Detroi Riot
This was one of the most violent and destructive riots in US history which resulted from racial tensions and economic inequality over the years. This riot began after a police raided an unlicensed bar which escalated into looting, arson, and fights between residents and police. National guard and US troops were eventually called in to help restore order. -
MLK assasination
MLK was shot and killed in Memphis Tennessee. He is remembered as one of the greatest advocates for racial equality and justice in History -
Apollo 11 lands on moon
Neil Armstrong and Edwin Aldrin become the first humans to set foot on the moon. This is where the famous words “One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind” also were said by Neil Armstrong -
Kent State shootings
During protest at Kent state, National Guard troops opened fire on a crowd of students which killed 4 students and injured 9 others. This event also sparked up a public opinion on the Vietnam war and led to to protests across the US
