    Brown vs. Board of Education
    This case was about segregation in education systems and how it was unconstitutional because of the very different treatment and education that students were getting based on their race.
  • Lynching of Emmett Till

    Lynching of Emmett Till
    In 1955, while visiting family in Mississippi, a young 14 year old boy was convicted for whistling at a white woman. He was abducted and murdered and his body was thrown into the Tallahatchie River.
  • Montgomery Buss Boycott

    Montgomery Buss Boycott
    Rosa Parks was asked to give up her seat for a white man and move to the back of the buss, she refused. This incident and others like it caused a boycott against segregation on busses. Instead of using the busses they walked everywhere. This boycott lasted a whole year, from December 5th 1955- December 20 1956.
  • Little Rock Nine

    Little Rock Nine
    9 African American students were enrolled to a white school, Little Rock Central High School as a result of the court ruling brown vs. the board of education. On their way to school they would be attacked and harassed. State troops had to escort them to school.
  • March on Washington

    March on Washington
    This was a massive protest in Washington for jobs and freedom for African Americans. There were an estimated 250,000 people who attended. On the steps of the Lincoln memorial MLK delivered his most famous speech.
  • “I Have a Dream”

    “I Have a Dream”
    This speech was given on the steps of the Lincoln memorial, delivered by MLK. This speech was about freedom and equality for African Americans. The dream that people would be judged by their character and not skin color, the dream that MLK could give his children whatever they desired.
  • Civil Rights Act of 1964

    Civil Rights Act of 1964
    This act outlawed discrimination based on race, religion, color, and sex. This act also prohibited discrimination is public settings like school, work, and federally funded programs.
  • Bloody Sunday

    Bloody Sunday
    On the Edmund Pettus Bridge state troops brutally beat and gassed civil rights protesters who were trying to cross the bridge. These protesters were marching for voting rights. This incident known as Bloody Sunday resulted in 3 dead civil rights activists.
  • MLK Assassination

    MLK Assassination
    At 6:04 pm MLK was standing on his balcony on the second floor in Memphis when he was shot. He was taken to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Memphis. His death led to outbreaks of racial violence.

    This act makes it illegal to discriminate in the sale, rental, or financing of a house and other house related activities.
