    The Cuban missile crisis was an event that occurred in October 1962. The crisis happened during the period known as the Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union. When the Soviet Union placed missiles on the island of Cuba, the two major countries came to the brink of nuclear war. In 1959 communists, led by Fidel Castro, had taken control of Cuba. In 1960 the Soviet Union promised to support the communists and to defend Cuba with Soviet weapons.

In the Yom Kippur War, Israel pushed both armies back into their own territory but in turn suffered heavy losses.
