Cornelia was born in 1845 in IL. Her father, Harvey B. Hurd, was a pioneer lawyer in Chicago, judge, and law faculty dean at Northwestern University. She married John A. Comstock when she was 25 and he was 36. They had 7 children by 1893. In 1900, she and her children are living with her father. The same census for John shows him divorced and living in Lyons, IL. In 1909, the SR Republican first mentioned Cornelia in an article on her father's estate.

John was born in Franklin, Michigan in 1845. Both his parents were born in NY and died in MI. Married Cornelia Hurd in 1882 .They had 7 children between 1883-1893. They are shown as divorced on the 1900 census.
