Christopher Columbus went on a voyage. He got to America thinking it was Japan, but it was not. He sailed to an island named San Salvador, and he also visited the coast of Venezuela and Central America. He claimed them as the Spanish Empire.

In the 1500's Cuba was colonized by Europeans. The colonization lasted many centuries. It had a huge impact on Native Americans because the Spanish brought unknown diseases to them, and after Columbus arrived, Cuba became a Spanish colony. In the 9th century there was a lot of rebellious activity from peasants and workers, but it failed to end Spanish rule.

In 1526 over one million African slaves were shipped to Cuba. Slaves were mainly used for getting rubber. A lot of Cuban descendants are from Afican American slaves because the number of slaves outnumbered the number of Europeans in Cuba. Cuba was the largest producer of sugar cane, so slaves were also used for getting sugar.

The Havana harbour in the West Indies was able to hold about 100 ships. In the year of 1762 the British captured the Havana. They were planning on taking the harbour for years, and the yellow fever quikly reduced the number of native Havana soliders, helping british forces with their objective.

In 1783 the Treaty of Paris was negotiated between the U.S and Great Britian.This treaty ended the revolutionary war. John Aams, Benjiman Franklin, John Jay, Thomas Jefferson, and Henry Laruns were taking part in the negotiations but Henry Laurens got captured by british warships and Thomas Jefferson did not leave the U,S in time, so it was conducted by Adams, Franklin and Jay.

This war was hapening for ten years hence the name.It was from 1868 to 1878 it was known as the Great War.This war was happening because Cuba wanted their independence from Spain. This war was the the first of the three liberation wars fought by Cuba.

This war was the second of the three liberation wars that Cuba fought against Spain. The war started in 1879 and ended in 1880. In some ways this war was a continuation of the Ten Year War. This conflict started when Calixto Garcia issued a manifesto or a public declaration of policy that aims against Spanish rule over Cuba.

On october 7,1886 slavery was abolished in Cuba by the Spanish royal decree. Not all countries abolished slavery at the same time, some abolished it as early as the fifteen hundreds.

The Cuban War of Independence was the last of the three liberation wars that Cuba fought against Spain. This war lasted from 1895 to 1898. This war occurred because Cuba’s politics were in Spanish territory, but Cuba was economically intertwined with the U.S. U.S forces were deployed in Cuba, Puerto Rico and the Philippine islands to fight against Spain.

On January 8th 1959 Cuba became a communist country under the rule of Fidel Castro, and Ernesto Che Guevara. Most countries in the southern hemisphere were not influenced by Soviet methods other than Cuba, which became a communist party after Fidel Castro overthrew Fulgencio Batista's regime.

When Cuba became a communist country it took all of the U.S businesses, and made them government owned.This is part of what caused the Cuban-U.S relationship really delicate. Cuba used most of its businesses to help Cubans collect sugar cane, which is Cuba's main export.

In 1961 The Bay of Pigs invasion was a mission funded by the CIA and U.S government. The mission's intent was to overthrow the communist rule of Fidel Castro, but it ended on a failure after Fidel Castro's military surrounded and captured the last revolutionary troops.

In 1962 the U.S decides to remove the Cuban Blockade. The U.S only did this because Cuba agreed to remove all of the soviet weapons from their country. Also all Russian HQ’s were removed by the end of the year. This removal of all weapons only took 1 month.

In 1962 after nukes were put in cuba by the USSR the world worried that they would use the nukes for war. This event was also known as the Cuban Missile Crisis. This was during the cold war so the chance of a nuclear war outbreak was even higher than usual.

In 1974 Cuba sent military troops to Angola with the aim to help with their liberation cause. The governmeny sent more than 25,000 troops for military support. After the liberation was complete, Cuban troops stayed in Angola to help their developing government.

In 1979 Russia launched an invasion of Afghanistan. In the 1960's Cuba was assisted by Russia, so Cuba decided to return the favor by supporting their invasion of Afghanistan.

Fidel Castro's brother, Raul Castro, took temporary control of Cuba. Fidel had not yet stepped down fully from the title of president of Cuba. He was still the president at that time, but his brother is doing all of the main work that Fidel is not longer able to complete.

In 2008 Raul Castro took full control of Cuba. He was the President after his brother Fidel stepped down completely, giving all his leadership to him. Fidel Castro was in power for nearly 5 decades if he had waited one more year to retire. He lead the country of Cuba through many iconic points in their country including a revolution, the Cuban Missile Crisis and the U.S invasion of the Bay of Pigs.
