The election was called by the Liberal government during a constitutional crisis surrounding the current budget. The election resulted in a hung parliament, as the Tories led by Arthur Balfour had the most votes, whilst the Liberals led by H. H. Asquith held the most seats, two more then the Tories. Asquith remained in power largely due to the support of the Irish Parliamentary Party led by John Redmond. -
With the Republicans and the Progressives splitting their vote, Champ Clark manages to secure the presidency on a progressive, isolationist platform. -
