    Silent Spring was written in 1962 by Rachel Carson. This book discussed the environmental harm that synthetic pesticides cause. The main aim of this book is to show the dangers of using pesticides and the harm that it will cause to the earth. This book spread much debate and is credited with being the first modern enviormental movement.

    This day is celebrated in honor of the earth. The main purpose is to demonstrate environmental protection. This day was first celebrated on April 22, 1970 and is globally recognized.
  • Bhopal Disaster

    This disaster occurred on December 3, 1984 and was known as one of the worst industrial accident in history. More than 45 tons of gas was leaked and spread throughout the surrounding neighborhoods. This disaster occurred due to poor maintenance and faulty safety systems.     U.S. Emergency Planning and Community Right to Know Act (EPCRA) was passed in 1986. This act mandates chemical facility reporting and emergency planning to ensure that nuclear accidents don’t happen. Source: group presentation

    On April 26th 1986, the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant exploded. This was the result of a flawed reactor design that was also managed by poorly trained workers.     Julia Butterfly is an environmental activist. She fought hard for protecting forests and preserving the ancient trees. Julia lived in a 1,000 year old redwood tree named Luna for over 2 years.     An Inconvenient Truth is an American documentary that was released in 2006. Former vice president Al Gore narrated the film. This documentary called for an urgent wake up call to climate change. This became very controversial and politically motivated.

  • Hamarabe Incident

    On May 28, 2016, Hamarabe the gorilla was shot and killed at the Cincinnati Zoo. A young boy fell into the gorillas enclosure. A zookeeper thought that Hamarabe was going to hurt the boy, so he shot and killed the 17 year old gorilla. The incident sparked public attention on social media and caused much controversy.
