  In June of 2022, The United States voted to overturn Roe v. Wade, a case promising abortion protection to women throughout the states. When this happened, people took to social media to spread awareness of this conflict. They also used social media to call for reinforcements and plan protests against this decision. The primary servers used were Instagram, TikTok, and Twitter.

  While conflict between Israel and Gaza has been occuring for decades, when Hamas attacked Israel on October 7th, 2023, this launched a mass genocide against the Palestinian people that-thanks to reporters-became highly publicized on social media. The social media sites most utilized were Instagram and TikTok, with many Palestinians begging users to vote and fight for change, and many activists using the platforms to spread awareness.

  The 2024 election was a very charged election. While other elections have had their own fair share of fake news, this election seemed to be a peak of fake news, AI, propaganda, and culture wars. The results greatly disturbed millions of Americans, who took to sites such as Instagram, YouTube, Twitter (X), and TikTok to voice their complaints. While other sites like Facebook still held relevence, the previously stated three were the main platforms of civil anger.

  Throughout 2025, there have been a rise of videos showing people of color being abused by ICE agents. Because of the Trump Administration's decisions on immigration status, there has been a great effort to highlight the struggles of immigrants and how they are being affected by the new regulations. I find that most of the videos on ICE agents tend to come from TikTok and Facebook. Here, people are trying to call for reinforcements and show the injustice occuring.

  The United States Government banned the short form social media platform, TikTok, at the start of January. This caused users to shift to other platforms such as Red Note-a Chinese version of Tiktok-and Instagram Reels in order to stay connected. People used these servers to plan to organize and revolt to win back TikTok. The ban lasted less than 24 hours, but is a powerful example on how important social media, specifically TikTok, is to the general public.
