In 2020, suddenly we were in the middle of a pandemic. All over social media, (specifically Facebook, Twitter, TikTok, and Instagram), we are seeing all sorts of information and opinions shared among the world. Whether or not this information is true, it was still being shared. Along with information being shared, we see lots of protests regarding both stances on the topic. -
Russia-Ukraine War
There has been conflicts between Russia and Ukraine for quite some time now, but in 2022, there was an invasion. The main social media used was Instagram, Facebook, and different news sites. We saw lots of war updates, propaganda, and campaigns from all forms of social media. On TikTok, we saw real time footage and videos posted by people who were living in the middle of this war. -
January 6th
On January 6th, 2021, there was an attack on the capitol. Extremist groups primarily used Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. Some tactics used were live streams that broadcasted the event in real time. Along with that, we saw conspiracy theories explode all over social media. -
GameStop Stock
In 2021, suddenly GameStop's stock skyrocketed. It was doubling in value daily. The main forms of social media used to promote this trend of buying stock in GameStop was Reddit, and Twitter. Using these platforms retail investors were able to coordinate buying stock all at once, along with sharing strategies. Along with physically buying the stock, lots of memes were created and shared across these social media platforms. -
"Barbenheimer"
In the summer of 2023, we see the phenomenon some like to call "Barbenheimer". This is when the movies Oppenheimer and Barbie came out on the same day. We saw TikTok, Instagram, Twitter, and other social media platforms blow up regarding this phenomenon. Some tactics we saw we contrasting the two films, )since they are very different), memes, and much more. This lead to both movies doing immensely well.
