  • Period: 300 to 1453

    Byzantine Empire

    Location: Southeastern Europe, Western Asia, and some of Northern Africa
    Fact: In the Byzantine Empire, they all mostly practiced Orthodox-Christian practices, which was led by an Emperor and Patriarch instead as the Roman Catholic Pope.
  • Period: 320 to 550

    Gupta Empire

    Location: Nothern, Central and some of Southern India
    Fact: Although the main religion being practiced during the Gupta Empire was Hinduism, other religions such and Buddhism were tolerated by the rulers both having similarities.
  • Period: 618 to

    Imperial China Empire

    Location: East Asia
    Fact: The main religion followed during the time of Imperial China was confucianism, a religion that regarded women as inferior, while required them to break and bind their feet when they were younger to have a physical appeal to their husbands.

    Muslim Empire

    Location: Occupied most of Southwest Asia, North Africa, and most of Spain
    Fact: The Muslim Empire practiced the Muslim religion by following the teachings of the Qur'an, Sunnah, and the 5 pillars of Islam.

    Japanese Empire

    Location: Japan
    Fact: The Japanese followed Shintoism a religion that respects and loves nature and with the influence of the Chinese it introduced Buddhism, causing the religions to seamlessly blended together.

    Holy Roman Empire

    Location: Mostly in Central Europe
    Fact: At the start of the Middle Ages, all Christians in western Europe belonged to the Roman Catholic Church and Christianity was incorporated into many simple, daily activities.

    Ghana Empire

    Location: Modern-day Marituana and Mali
    Fact: Despite the Muslim traders trying to convert the king and his subjects, the Ghanaians gracefully declined, allowing them to practice their religion, but did not convert.

    Maya Empire

    Location: Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico and some of Central America
    Fact: The Maya worshiped many gods centering the aspects of nature such as a serpent god, sun god, rain god and even maize/corn god.

    Mali Empire

    Mali Empire: 1235-1650
    Location: Modern day Mali, Senegal, Gambia, Guinea, Mauritania, and a little bit of Niger and Burkina Faso
    Fact: Despite his other subjects being less dedicated to the religion, Mansa Musa, a profound leader from the Kingdom of Mali, was a devout Muslim. He spread the word of his riches to his pilgrimage to the Hajj.
  • Period: 1325 to 1521

    Aztec Empire

    Location: Central and Southern Mexico, specifically in The Valley of Mexico
    Fact: In the capital city Tenochtitlán, the Aztecs had a plaza with a great temple honoring their main god, Huitzilopochtli, and their rain god Tlaloc. The temple had stones where the priests would offer human sacrifices to the gods.

    Inca Empire

    Location: Modern day Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador, Colombia, Chile, and Argentina
    Fact: The Aztecs, similar to the Maya in the way they had many gods based on nature, having many rituals and offered many sacrifices, only human if the matters were dire.
  • Period: 1464 to

    Songhai Empire

    Location: Central Mali, Niger, and a little of Nigeria
    Fact: After the Songhai leader, Sunni Ali took over Mali, some Muslim citizens were opposed of the fact that he wasn’t Muslim and chose a new leader.
