  • John Locke

    The theory of education on the scientific method. Locke believed the concept of tabula rasa, that children are born natural, not evil. Belief that parents, society, education and world are not effects on a child's upbringing.
  • Johann Amos Comenius

    Comenius wrote the first picture book for children called Orbis(1592-1670) This book was used for guidance for teachers and train senses for the children in early education. Comenius believed that education should follow the natural color of things.
  • Johann Henrich Pestalozzi

    A swiss teachers. She performed many teaching and caring aspects in early education. Pestalozzi was a more pragmatic, and learned teaching basic skills, while caring but also educating the child. Stressed that the integrated curriculum would develop the child's education. 1746-1827
  • Robert Owen

    Owen was a similar educator to Pestalozzi.LOwen stressed the history of social reform to families and to people working in cotton mills. He introduced labor practices for workers and schooling for their children. Established that most would begin working in the mills as early as 6 years old. (1771-1958)
  • Jean-Jacques Rousseau

    Rousseau was a swiss writer writer and philosopher who established the idea that children are not inherently evil, but naturally good. He is best known for writing "Emile" in 1761, where he raised a hypothetical child to adulthood . He stressed that educations should be given by goodness and allow random interest and lessons teach and form the child to success.
  • Friedrich Wilhelm Froebel

    One of the biggest people in early childhood education from 1782-1852, started his teaching career in 1836. He is most known as the "Father of the Kindergarten" The word "kindergarten", comes from "children's garden" and that was a large motive for FRiedrichs career. His own childhood was unpleasant, he wanted to make a difference and wanted early childhood education to be happy. The right to play, own toys, and be taught by teachers a fun and active institute.
  • Kindergarten

    German was the first country to have kindergarten. Kindergarten has gone through many social changes throughout the years. At first it was for poor students and then it went to be led by churches. The kindergarten we know today is the first grade that students enter when they go to school to help them become more independent and prepared for the following grades.
  • Rudolf Steiner

    Austrian philosopher, scientist, and artist who gave lectures for German factories that led to the foundry of schools like Waldorf Education. This is an independent school, movement and number more than 1200 schools worldwide. (2021) Believed that early stages of childhood is important to its own right.

    Jim Crown schools, who only taught students skills used for agriculture and domestic service. Wanted them to fit the needs of economy and society. Jim Crow comes from a character in late 1800s and refers to the system of segregation
  • Social reform

    Social reform expects that schooling for young children guides them to social change and improvement. Head start and Highscope programs helped improve children's health and well being.
  • Maria Montessori

    The first woman in Italy to get a medical degree. She started off studying children's diseases and through her work she found education more interesting.
  • Nursery Schools

    Nursery Schools were for middle and upper class homes and worked with several families, Until around 1960, nursery schools began serving poor families
  • A. S Neill

    Neill was the most famous person to promote the "free/natural school". His book summer Hill shows 40 years of the educational program, as to which he was head master in. Neill assumed children were inherently evil which forced educators to teaching in a way that corrupted their nature.
  • High Scope

    The movement for equality came under balcl leadership. Became national in the scope. These children were starting to become citizens with rights.
  • media and technology

    Television, video games, computers, to iphones. The influence children get from observing social media and the rush to content. Children are pushed by a fast paced society which could put most children at risk.
  • DAP

    DAP provides education for the child's learning abilities and match them to mental tasks for their learning, which is then discovered by their upbringing.
