First Ipad by Apple
On January 27, 2010 the first generation apple ipad was announced to the public by Steve Jobs. Using educational apps and games for learning became more excepted this year. Teachers implementing gamification into the classroom made learning more engaging and fun for students. With the addition of the apple ipad, learning become more accesible and mobile for both teachers and students. -
Flipped classrooms introduced
Flipped classrooms are a flipped approach at the traditional teaching method. There is an emphasis on prepatory work in order to be more interactive during class time. This approach requires access to some sort of mobile device. -

BYOD and Learning Analytics
BYOD rose in some schools allowing students to bring their electronics to school for education purposes. This created a issue of equity and focus. Today classrooms come equipt with electronic carts to ensure equal opportunity for all. Learning analytics also rose allowing teachers to track student performance. Today learning analytics provide students with individual learning plans for success. -
MOOCs
In 2012 the popularity of Massive Open Online Courses began to rise and was described as “the educational buzzword of 2012.” These courses were typically low cost or free and allowed people to take courses around the world and at their own pace. Students could learning from universities across the globe despite their location or social standing. This classes helped push the idea of online learning -
Chromebook Popularity
In 2013, Chromebooks became highly popular in the classroom. Chromebooks accounted for 1/5 of all mobile devices nationwide in schools. Chromebooks were more afforadable than the traditional laptop and allowed students to access their work from anywhere. -
Google Classroom
Google Classroom launched in 2014 and is still used today as a main resource for students and teachers. Google classroom allowed for assignments,grading,organization, and communication to be done in one app. Paper assignments began to drastically decrease. -
Digital Badges
In 2015 digital badges began to grow. Digital badges tracked mastery of skills and rewarded digital achievements. Teachers set clear goals that students could visibly see themselves achieve. Today Digital badges can be used as a sign of mastery and achievement when applying to programs, colleges, etc. -
Flipped Classroom popularity
In 2016 flipped classrooms were implemented significantly more than before. Scholars became more interested in flipped classrooms increasing from 1 paper in 2012 to 32 in 2016. Students collaborated more in the classroom and became more engaged in the learning environment. -
Rise of AI
AI has been introduced and used but became increasingly popular in education in 2017. For example, AI can give suggestion on writing and can answer student questions. Grammarly is an AI writing tool used by both students and teachers for effective writing. Grammarly is still used today and AI has been enhanced to make the learning experience simpler. -
Interactive E books
To enhance engagement in Ebooks, quizzes and questions grew more popular in the E book experience. This improved student focus and understanding of the material that was being read. Videos also explained concepts allowing students to visualize what was being taught and correctly answer questions. -
Remote Learning (COVID)
Schools had to move 100 percent online with the Global pandemic Covid-19 and nationwide shut down. Education relied solely on technology and tools such as Zoom and google classroom were more emphasized than ever. Communication and teaching had to be done through technology. The pandemic caused a large increase in remote learning even after the shutdown. Some enjoyed virtual learning and never returned back to the classroom.
