As a politician he played an important role in the Cretan Question, as well as in Greek political events from 1910 until his death

He was the political protagonist of the doubling of Greece after the Balkan wars of 1912-1913.

During World War I he supported the Entente, openly disagreeing with the King's stance of neutrality.

He returned to the prime ministership in the period 1917 - 1920 but left Greece after his defeat in the elections of November 1920.

He returned in 1924 for a few months and in 1928 was again elected prime minister

In January 1933 he became prime minister for the last time and in March 1935 after a coup attempt he fled to Paris
