  • Oklahoma City Bombing

The Oklahoma City bombing revealed why anti-government anger has contributed to domestic terrorist acts more of a danger. Timothy McVeigh's attack was a tragic reminder of how political anger in the United States had turned to violence. This event was significant because it showed that threats to national security could come from the US as well as other countries.

  • Welfare Reform Act

The Welfare Reform Act dramatically changedthe system of social security by removing benefits and forcing people to work. It showed that both parties were looking for a smaller government along with private responsibility. This event was important because it alsochanged the way that the federal government handled poverty and financial aid forever.

  • Bush vs Gore Election

The presidential election in 2000, which was controversial, revealed big problems in the U.S. electoral system. It caused anxiety regardingdemocracy and fairness for peoplewhen the Supreme Court got involved. I felt this was important to add because it lowered people's trust in voting and increased group differences.
    (Kruse Zelizer 103–105)
  • Patriot act

The Patriot Act was passed to give the government more power to perform surveillance on people in response to 9/11. It was made to avoid terrorism, but it created privacy and human rights issues. This event is important because it shows the ongoing conflict between securing the nation while allowing people to do what they want.

  • September 11 attack

The terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, completelychanged how the US worked with both foreign and internal problems and killed nearly 3,000 people. Thisincreased national security, military action in other countries, and changes to civil rights. This event has significance because it changed American politics and reshaped America. I wanted to add this eventbecause my dad was there, so I know about this event personally.
    (Kruse Zelizer 111–113)
  • U.S. invasion of iraq

Claims about Iraq having WMDs led to the invasion of the country, but these claims later proved to be false. The war hurt the U.S.'s image and made the Middle East less secure. This event was significant as it causedpeople doubt the government's foreign policy and leadership.
    (Kruse Zelizer 121–124)
  • Financial crisis in 2008

The financial crisis resulted in a lot of job cuts, bankruptcies, and unemployment. It showed that financial regulations weren't working and made inequality worse. I felt this event should be included because it altered how people looked atpolitics and made them suspicious of the rich.
    (Kruse Zelizer 145–147)
  • Barack Obamas election

When Barack Obama was elected, it marked a historic time; he was the first Black president of the United States. It served as a sign of growth, yet it also made political and racial tensions increase. This event has significance because it transformed the way people think regarding national identity and politics.
    (Kruse Zelizer 150–152)
  • Affordable care act

The Affordable Care Act brought healthcare available to millions more Americans, but it also caused a lot of political dispute. It was a big step towards more federal involvement in healthcare.
    (Kruse Zelizer, 158–160)
  • Black Lives Matter

From 2014-2015 Black lives matter was brought to light. Unarmed Black Americans beingkilled by police introduced the Black Lives Matter movement to the focus of people all over the country. It revealed police violence and racism in the system. I felt like this event should be included because it changed the way people talked about race, equality, and disparities in today's America.
