Kennedy takes office and he believes that Vietnam's battle was important to the end goal of containing communism. -
Seized power and Executed Diem
Diem was extremely unpopular because he discriminated against buddhists. Vietnamese generals plotted and seized power from Diem, later killing him. -
Passed the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution
Johnson announced North Vietnam torpedos fired on 2 US destroyers in the Gulf of Tonkin. Johnson asked for the authority over the military so he can make quick decisions and congress agreed.
