  • Period: 900 BCE to 232 BCE

    Ancient Greece

    This span of time includes the Geometric period, which includes linear patterns and abstract motif. The Orientalizing period which includes decorative motif and naturalistic animals influenced from the Ancient Near East. The Archaic Period which includes Kori sculptures and the archaic smile. The Classical Period included an idealized and natural human form, and dynamic movement.
  • Orientalizing period - Greek Pitcher (Olpe)
    800 BCE

    Orientalizing period - Greek Pitcher (Olpe)

    This pitcher is made of clay and used to pour wine. It was fired three times to get the blackened color and it will be chipped away to create the figures. This is from the Orientalizing period because it has mythical creature and ancient near east influence.
  • Period: 800 BCE to 100 BCE

    Etruscan Art

    In the Etruscan time period, there were independent city-states, they were influenced by Greece, the Near East and Egypt. There was pottery and funeral objects like urns. There were also human figures, terracotta sculptures, bright paint and fibulae.
  • Geometric Period: Dipylon Krater

    Geometric Period: Dipylon Krater

    Dipylon Krater is a vessel made of terracotta. It was found at Dipylon cemetery and was used as a burial marker. On the top half you can see the deceased and household members around them as well as the burial shroud. The bottom half shows a military scene that the deceased was involved in. This is from the Geometric period because it is lined with linear patterns and is a vessel.

    The Parade Fibulae is a pin, which would have be pun on clothes/togas. It is made of rock and gold. This is Etruscan art because it has motifs that have Near East influence.

    Etruscan Art - Mourners in Bucchero

    The Mourners are made of bucchero clay. They would be in the ground and next to an urn or a bed. It was found in the Regolini-Galassi tomb. This is Etruscan art because it it is a funeral object.

    Archaic Period - Berlin Kore Holding a Pomegranate

    This Kore is a statue of Persephone, goddess of spring and the underworld. It is made of marble and found in a cemetery at Keratea. This is from the Archaic Period because of the archaic smile and because it is a statue.

    This sarcophagus is made of painted terracotta. On top lays a husband and a wife at almost equal height. This is Etruscan art because it is a funerary object, terracotta and human figures.
  • Early Classical Period - Myron Discus Thrower (Diskobolos)

    Early Classical Period - Myron Discus Thrower (Diskobolos)

    Myron Discus Thrower is a roman copy of Greek original bronze. The statue is posed as if he is about to throw the discus. This is from the Classical Period because it has the idealized body and natural form.
  • Late Classical Period - Hermes with the Infant Dionysus
    300 BCE

    Late Classical Period - Hermes with the Infant Dionysus

    This statue is made of marble and is 2.13 m. Dionysus is the god of wine and chaos. Hermes is the god of travelers and a messenger for the gods. This statue has naturalism and an idealized body which goes with the Classical Period.
