Henry VIII became king of England on April 21, 1509, following the death of his father, Henry VII. He was crowned just a few months later, on June 24, 1509, at Westminster Abbey, when he was 17 years old.
  • Period: Jun 11, 1509 to May 23, 1533

Henry VIII married Catherine of Aragon

She had previously been Princess of Wales while married to Henry's elder brother, Arthur, Prince of Wales, for a short period before his death. Married from 1509 to 1533, she was divorced (her marriage was annulled) by Henry after failing to produce a surviving male heir.
  • Period: 1522 to 1536

    married Anna Boleyn

Anne refused to become his mistress, insisting on a marriage proposal. This led Henry to begin secret proceedings to annul his first marriage to Catherine of Aragon in 1527. After at least two miscarriages, Anne failed to provide Henry with a son, a major concern for the King. In April 1536, Anne was arrested on charges of adultery, incest, and treason. Historians believe these charges were largely fabricated. She was beheaded on Tower Green in May 1536.
