A Design History of the Video Game Controller

  • Atari 2600 Ad

Pictured is an Atari 2600 joystick advertisement. The construction of the joystick is much more simple than controllers today, however, and only features 2 inputs. Its age is very evident and the presentation of the ad, with big and bold wording that does not shy away from being maximalist. If you look closely, these controllers have not changed individually, but have changed according to the requirements of the games.
  • NES Controller

The Nintendo NES controller is the first controller where one can see the form of the modern game controller begin to develop. It featured a D Pad with 8 movement input directions that the right thumb would control and two buttons, labeled A and B that the right thumb would control. It also featured a select and start button that are still present in controllers today. The controllers design is derived from Nintendo's success with the Game and Watch series and controller design.
