    Battle of Jutland

the largest naval battle of World War I, fought between the British and German fleets on May 31-June 1, 1916, off the coast of Denmark. Although the German fleet managed to sink more British ships, the British maintained control of the sea and the strategic advantage of the naval blockade against Germany. The high British losses in ships and men, however, initially led to it being seen as a costly setback.
  • Lusitania sank

while traveling from New York to Liverpool. The torpedo strike, which happened about 12 miles off the coast of Ireland, caused the ship to sink in under 20 minutes. Of the nearly 2,000 people on board, 1,195 died, including 128 Americans, and the incident increased anti-German sentiment, ultimately playing a role in the U.S. entering World War I.
