  • Constitution act of 1982

    Constitution act of 1982
    This act was able to let Canada become a fully independent nation from the British parliament. Canada was able to change its constitution without British approval.
  • Meech lake accord

    Meech lake accord
    The Meech lake accord was an attempt to make a change in the Canadian constitution act in 1987. It was meant to bring Quebec into the 1982 constitution and address their various provincial issues. It was mainly to see Quebec as a distinct society. Though eventually it failed and was never successful.
  • Fall of the Berlin wall

    Fall of the Berlin wall
    The Berlin wall was a step towards uniting Germany. Political changes were made which started to allow less restrictions and regulations regarding east Germans traveling to west Germany. The opening of the border caused thousands of east Germans to leave the communist side and find new opportunities elsewhere in west Germany
  • Oka crisis

    Oka crisis
    The Oka crisis was a standoff Mohawk protestors and Canadian authorities. It started with dispute over land in Oka Quebec. The town wanted to expand a golf course and build townhouses which to Mohawks was wrong since it was considered their sacred lands. It ultimately led to a resistance of the Mohawks and Canadian armed forces had to be deployed.

    G.S.T is a tax that was introduced in Canada since January 1st 1991 by prime minister Brian Mulroney. It is a federal tax that applies to sale of goods and services.
  • Desert Storm

    Desert Storm
    Desert storm was the name of the operation led by the U.S military to invade Iraq and liberate Kuwait. It was a key part of the gulf war because the main goal was to expel Iraqi forces out Kuwait.
  • Fall of Soviet Union

    Fall of Soviet Union
    The Soviet Union and its ideology of communism dissolved in 1991. It's due to many factors but one notable reason is their economy. The Soviets struggled to keep pace with advancements and market trends with their communistic ideas that ultimately led to their downfall and also mark the end of the cold war.
  • Charlottetown accord

    Charlottetown accord
    The Charlottetown accord was a similar proposal after the Meech lake accord for Canada to address Quebec's concerns. It also was to recognize Indigenous self governance but was then rejected by majority voters in a referendum.
  • NAFTA

    NAFTA or the North American Free Trade Agreement is a trade agreement between Canada, Mexico, and the United states. It was made to eliminate tariffs and other trade barriers between the countries
  • Rwandan Genocide

    Rwandan Genocide
    The Rwandan genocide was an event that spanned around 100 days. It happened during their civil war and members of many ethnic groups were killed by Hutu militias.
  • 1995 Quebec Referendum

    1995 Quebec Referendum
    The referendum in 1995 was the second referendum in Quebec. The proposed question was if Quebec should be its own sovereignty and be a independent country, but still offering political and economic agreements in Canada. Unfortunately just like the Meech and Charlottetown accord, the majority votes answered no to the question only by 50.58%.
  • Creation of Nunavut

    Creation of Nunavut
    On April 1st 1999, the Canadian map was redrawn as the Northwest territories divides into two territories, which created the new territory of Nunavut. It was years before that Inuit leaders have prepared for this event to finally happen
  • Nisga’a First Nation Treaty

    Nisga’a First Nation Treaty
    The Nisga'a treaty is an agreement between Canada, BC, and the Nisga'a nation. The treaty acknowledges the Nisga'a rights to self government and their land rights.
  • Canada in Afghanistan

    Canada in Afghanistan
    Starting in 2001, Canada was involved in attacking Afghanistan as response to 9/11 with the U.S. Thousands of Canadians were sent to combat terrorism and support the Afghan government. Nearing the end, 158 Canadians were killed.
  • 9/11

    9/11
    The September 11 attack was a terrorist attack led by the terrorist group Al Qaeda. 19 terrorists hijacked 4 planes in the U.S and use them as a weapon for significant areas. The world trade center/twin towers were hit by 2 of the planes which both collapsed. One plane also hit the U.S pentagon and another had crashed onto a field which in total killed 2977 people.
  • Same sex Marriage

    Same sex Marriage
    Canada legalized same sex marriage across the country in 2005. With the civil marriage act through, it allowed same sex couples to marry anywhere in the country. It's to note some provinces had already allowed same sex marriage but it was this act that had the entire country allowing it.
  • Residential school apology

    Residential school apology
    Former Canadian prime minister Steven Harper issued an apology on behalf of the Canadian government to their previous acts on the residential school system.
  • Vancouver olympics 2010

    Vancouver olympics 2010
    The Olympic winter games in 2010 was an international sporting event that took place in Vancouver, British Columbia. It was a huge moment for Canada to host an International sports event and Canada themselves won 14 gold medals.
  • Canada and Syrian Refugees

    Canada and Syrian Refugees
    The liberal government of Canada acknowledged and expanded resettlement for thousands of Syrians coming to Canada. It was done due to a major conflict within Syria prior and thousands of civilians wanted to leave.
  • Tragically hip Final concert

    Tragically hip Final concert
    Tragically hip was a Canadian rock band in Ontario, active from 1983. They were a special music group representing Canada and considered the most "Canadian band in the world". On August 20th 2016, they performed their final concert which was broadcasted globally.
