  • Latin Grammar Schools

    Latin Grammar Schools

    The first Latin Grammar School was established in 1635 in Boston, Massachusetts. Their sole purpose was to teach young boys math, reading, writing, and literature. Only white boys from wealthy families were able to attend.
  • Harvard University

    Harvard University

    At the time of it's establishment, Harvard was known as "New College". In 1636, it was established in Massachusetts as the first Puritan university in America. This is where wealthy white boys would go after attending Latin Grammar School.
  • Webster's American Spelling Book

    Webster's American Spelling Book

    This book was created by Noah Webster in 1783. His intention was to develop a more literate, virtuous, and law-abiding nation. He wanted to shape citizens who have a strong attachment to Federalist America.
  • First Normal School

    First Normal School

    The first one normal school was established in 1839 in Massachusetts. The normal school was an idea proposed by Horace Mann as a school to train teachers. It was mainly used to educate primary school teachers. The first well-known teacher was Catherine Beecher; she was one of the first teachers at a normal school.
  • Carlisle School

    Carlisle School

    The Carlisle School was established in 1879 in Pennsylvania. These were boarding schools solely for Native American children. These schools were advertised as off-reservation boarding schools that would educate Native American children and give them better economic and social opportunities. They were designed to deculturize children by cutting their hair and destroying their native clothes.

    Plessy v. Ferguson

    This supreme court case ruled that schools could be separate-but-equal. This meant that schools could be segregated on the basis of race, but they would still be "equal". The white children always got better opportunities.
  • Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka

    Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka

    This supreme court case overturned Plessy v. Ferguson. It ruled that segregation was unconstitutional. This case started the slow journey of integration in public schools.
  • Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA)

    Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA)

    ESEA increased the federal funding for school districts that had high percentages of poor students. This ensured that students would have the same opportunities. It was also the largest expenditure of federal funds for public schools in the nation's history.
  • Federal Department of Education

    Federal Department of Education

    The federal Department of Education was created by President Jimmy Carter in 1979. The DE was created to give the federal government some power over public education. Following this establishment, the US Supreme Court ruled that prayer was not allowed in public schools due to its violation to the First Amendment of the Constitution.

    Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA)

    ESSA was the eighth reauthorization of the original Elementary and Secondary Education Act. The goal of this law is to make sure all children are provided with the same education opportunities. It ensures that students are taught at high academic standards. It also requires that important information be disclosed to families, students, educators, and communities through annual statewide exams.
