JACL founded
JACL (Japanese American Citizens League) was founded in 1929. This was a response to the anti-Japanese sentiments and to help Japanese Americans gain their civil rights back. -
WWll
When Pearl Harbor was attacked, the United States forcibly moved Japanese Americans into concentration camps. The JACL helped advocate for their rights and worked to resettle Japanese Americans in the Midwest. -
Post-war Efforts
JACL campaigned to ban the California Alien Law, this law prohibited Japanese from owning land. They also worked to secure naturalization rights for Japanese immigrants -
Redress Movement
The JACL was the lead for the redress movement. This movement fought for an apology from the U.S. government for the wrongs of the internment camps from WWII. Which later culminated in the passage of the Civil Liberties Act. -
Ongoing Justice
The JACL still fights against discrimination2025 and also advocates for fair treatment to immigrants and refugees. Along with opposing racial hate crimes and supporting LGBTQ+ rights.
