The Iron Curtain
The Iron curtain was made by Winston Churchill on March 5, 1946 after World War 2. It was a ideological barrier that separated Western and Eastern Europe from each other due to the South being communist and the West being Democratic. This impacted trade, communication, and much more for the West and the East. -
Berlin Blockade
This event happened on June 24, 1948 and it is when the Soviet Union cut off all access into West Berlin and those people were trapped inside. It happened in West Berlin (obviously) and it was to prevent any Western Allies from getting in to West Berlin. How and why it happened was disagreements over the future of Germany to prevent anything from happening to it. -
China became Communist
China became a communist country on October 1, 1949 during the Cold War. They became communist because of a long revolutionary and Civil war by their leader, Mao Zedong declared that they had seized power in 1949 over the Nationalist party called Kuomintang. They are still communist to this day. -
Korean War
The Korean war started on June 25, 1950 and ended in 1953. The invasion of South Korea backed up by the U.S. by North Korea backed up by China and the Soviet Union was the primarily cause of the Korean war and also North Korea was communist and South Korea wasn't so that was also a reason. This crossed the line splitting up Korea called the 38th parallel. -
Vietnam War
This was a war between North and South Vietnam which started on November 1, 1955. The leader of North Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh, wanted the North and South to both be Communist, while the South didn't want to, so the U.S. joined the south. They did it by using warfare strategies and war supplies, but the North still ended up winning the war. -
Bay of Pigs Invasion
The U.S. and Cuban exiles tried to overthrow the communist Cuban government lead by Fidel Castro, but failed. They wanted to overthrow them because they thought they would surprise him and to make Cuba not a communist country any more. It happened on April 17, 1961 and was located in Cuba, at the Bay of Pigs and the U.S. used Cuban exiles that had been trained by the CIA to fight Castro with them. -
The Fall of the Berlin Wall
The Berlin wall split up East Germany, Communist from all of West Germany, not Communist which started in August 12-13, 1961. When the wall was took down, it was a new step towards German reunification which means bringing separated families back together. It was made not to let anyone into West Germany for their freedom in Communist East Germany. It fell on November 9, 1989. -
Cuban Missile Crisis
The Cuban Missile Crisis started on October 16, 1962. It was a standoff between the U.S. and the Soviet Union for 13 days because they were secretly putting missiles in Cuba 90 miles away from the U.S. It ended when the U.S. made an agreement with the Soviet Union for them to remove the missiles from Cuba in agreement for the U.S. to not to invade Cuba. -
First Man on the Moon
On July 20, 1969, Neil Armstrong landed on the moon, making him the first man ever on the moon. This was driven by the space race for the U.S. to beat Russia from putting a man on the moon first. President Kennedy had declared it to be a goal to get a man on the moon by the end of the 1960's and they did complete that goal! -
Mount St. Helens
On May 18, 1980, Mount St. Helens erupted. It was due to trapped magma and super heated ground water, even with a chunk of it's side of the North falling down causing a landslide! Nobody made her erupt, she just had pressure build up. This happened in the U.S. in the state of Washington which killed 57 people, caused land damage of a 230 mile radius, and ash reaching 80,000 feet in the air!
