Linus Torvalds begins working on a project that later became the Linux kernel. Linus continued to document and talk of his operating system ahead of release. -
X Windows System was ported to Linux by Orest Zborowski, allowing Linux to use GUI for the first time. -
After many iterations and alliteration Linux 0.99 is released. This version uses GNU GPL integrating GNU components into Linux making it a fully fledged free operating system. -
Over 100 engineers work to adapt the linux kernel to the GNU environment. Allows for a large application type pool. -
Linux is dubbed the free Unix clone. Projects such as Debian begin to form and build off of the Linux architecture. -
Version 2.0 of the Linux kernel is released. The kernel is now able to support multiple processors at the same time. This has advanced Linux to be a serious competitor for large OS companies. -
Torvalds announces the Linux project now has a mascot. A small penguin, referencing the time he was bitten at the zoo by a small penguin. -
The Linux community continues to grow, the Open Source Development Lab is formed. An independent nonprofit organization which works to further optimize Linux OS. -
Dell started to release laptops preloaded with ubuntu pre installed on them. -
OSDL and the Free Standards group merge to create the Linux Foundation. Meant to help build and promote Linux as a competitor for Microsoft windows. -
Version 3.0 of Linux is released. Support continues to grow as the user count pushes upwards. -
