  • World War I

    World War I

    • U.S. stayed out for a while, policy of neutrality
    • U.S. entered war on April 6, 1917
    • Paris Peace conference in January of 1919 inaugurated the end of the war where the Treaty of Versailles was signed
  • 19th amendment

    19th amendment

    • Grants women the right to vote
    • Due to decades of protests, marches, resistance, and women of risked their lives such as: Susan B. Anthony and Ida B. Wells
  • The great depression

    • Longest, most severe economic downturn
    • Lasted many long years until 1939
    • Americans were unemployed, starving, and in poverty Roosevelt's New deal saved the day!
  • Pearl Harbor/ World War II

    • Japanese bombs the U.S, in turn, leads the United States to end isolationism and join the war
    • In 1945, U.S. drops bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki
    • 1st and only use of nuclear weapon in war, leading Japan to surrender and ends the war

    • Having races separate went against the "separate but equal" doctrine in Plessy v. Fergueson
    • Ruled segregation in schools unconstitutional
    • Shortly after, Rosa Parks led the Montgomery boycott
  • Civil Rights Act

    • End of discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, etc.
    • Title I states equal voting rights with no bias against minorities or underprivileged Title II bans discrimination by trade unions, schools, or employers
  • Apollo 11

    • Neil Armstrong becomes the 1st person to walk on the moon
    • Objectives of mission were preform crewed lunar landing return to Earth, get scientific information by lunar module, deploy television camera to transmit signals to Earth
    • Many attempts and fails later, Armstrong and his crew landed on July 24th, 1969

    • Legalizes abortion
    • U.S. Supreme court rules 7-2 on January 22, 1973
    • Caused because criminalizing abortion violates the constitutional right to privacy found in the 14th amendment
    • Unfortunately, this was overturned in 2022
  • Oklahoma City bombing

    • Terrorist attack where homemade bomb exploded in a truck outside a building
    • Killing 169 people, whom 19 were children
    • More than 500 people were injured
    • Lead to an increase in security outside federal buildings
    • 1st and deadliest terrorist attack ever until 9/11

    • Planted bombs in the cafeteria to kill hundreds by they did not detonate properly
    • The slow police took hours before arriving

    • Set of national debate on how to end gun violence in schools and massive changes were made in school security nationwide
