Considered to be the first modernism piece, an oil painting that depicts a nude woman amongst clothed men shocked viewers and really challenged expectations and norms.
-
An oil painting that key termed the Impressionism movement, depicting the port of Le Havre in a half-finished fashion that critics found distasteful and an insult to the movement. Many other artists would adopt the term for their own pieces.
-
One of Van Gogh's earlier pieces, depicts a Cow and shows Van Gogh's structuring his own art style in impressionism.
-
Van Gogh wrote to his brother that the café had taken so much of his money, as revenge he painted the place. An oil painting that shows that classic Van Gogh art style, peak impressionism, except Van Gogh was really acting out against the movement and using more abstract forms, so more post-impressionism.
-
Emerging in the late 19th century, the term was used to describe a style that broke away from tradition and instead celebrated new ideas and experimentation, many art styles fall under this umbrella.
-
Fauvism would emerge outta the ashes of impressionism, a style that really is a spectrum, with this oil painting really being characterized by its brushwork. Henri Rousseau would be heavily criticized for his art style and influence on the fauvism movement, other pieces such 1891's tiger in tropical storm would have the same style and criticism.
-
Other Fauvism pieces were known for their bold colors, and sharing the same name as our last Henri, and medium, this piece shows the other world of the movement.
-
Another movement emerging would be Cubism, with this piece really characterizing it. Harsh edges, emphasis on abstract shapes and forms that are emphasized by contrasting shadows and lights all make up Cubism. As discussed in class, this oil painting completely destroyed tradition, and alongside the subjects the piece really baffled critics.
-
Cubism would also be seen in architectures, as shown in the modernism thumbnail and this photo, many buildings still continue to carry the Cubism torch in a new style, contemporary!
-
Dada would take things to another level, really pushing art into another direction, many people challenged the idea of what should be art and why Dada should be discredited but many still pursued the message, and none do that more boldy than this readymade piece. This obviously made critics very upset, I think it's ahead of its time!
-
Surrealism was starting to emerge around this time and really defined the modernism movement, with forms breaking down into abstract fever dream like visuals, it really pushed the wave of abstract art. This oil painting is an early example of the movement; Ernst inspired other artists such as Dali.
-
Futurism would grow alongside Cubism, and eventually outlast it, sharing very similar characteristics, the lines between the two often blur but Futurism usually centers around factory's, technology and buildings just like this piece does.
-
We can see in this oil painting how Surrealism was growing around this point, forms were almost always obliterated to the point of unrecognition, some on the other hand were a little less intense.
-
A more grounded take on Surrealism, this oil painting just feels like an expansion of this world that Dali paints, vast abnormal landscapes with strange subjects, this piece is just an average day at the beach in Dali's world. Other pieces like Persistence of Memory, depicting liquifying stop watches is another great example of Dali's take on Surrealism.
