In kindergarten, I started my reading journey with a lot of excitement and curiosity. I was learning that letters had sounds and that those sounds could come together to make words I knew, like “cat” or “mom.” Reading felt playful and fun. I can remember singing songs, chanting rhymes, and looking at books with colorful pictures that helped me connect words to meaning.

3rd Grade: I transitioned from “learning to read” to “reading to learn,” and I got to dive into short chapter books like Goosebumps. My all time favorites. Especially the Fear Street editions

Being a Christian meant that I needed to know the Bible. I can remember my mom giving me the Teen Study Bible. I got lost in that book and was fascinated, appalled, scared, angry, uplifted, happy and all other emotions you can feel all in one. That Bible was my main bible until it became worn out and started falling apart. Many years later.

6th grade. What a time. I learned what a book report was and surprisingly loved doing them. I was reading more and started enjoying longer chapter books. I remember reading the book Holes and then seeing the movie (that came out years later but still)
-
I was introduced to classics like To Kill a Mockingbird. Reading it made me think about race and justice in ways that felt personal to me as a Black student.
-
Man, Shakespeare. I sometimes struggled with reading his work but I remembered also learning how to break down the tough language so I could better understand it so I could then enjoy it more.
-
The illness and then subsequent death of my mother had me reaching for different reading material. I wanted to read books that would ease my grief and answer questions about the afterlife.

I can not even remember who introduced me to the hunger games series but I all I can say is thank you. Reading The Hunger Games was a turning point for me. I felt Katniss’s fear and determination as if I were in the arena with her, which made the story feel intense and real.

Once Covid restrictions ended, I was able to reattend church and I had a new but old and familiar friend with me. The King James Bible. I frequently would read some of the stories in there to my children-Noah's Ark, Daniel in the Lion's Den, David Goliath, Samson Delilah, Jonah and the Whale.

I am not afraid to admit that I have found my niche in reading material and that is romance books. I love a great romance book, whether its shifter related, demons and angels, witches, mutants, comedic, sappy, anything romance and Ill read it.
