    Minamata disaster

    The Minamata disaster in 1932 was a severe case of mercury poisoning in Minamata, Japan. It was caused by the Chisso corporation’s discharge of methylmercury-contaminated wastewater it ended up accumulating in the local fish as well as shellfish and as a result poisoned the residents who ate the fish. Which resulted in symptoms like tremors, vision loss, and death.

After the story was published it sparked the environmental movement by revealing what chemicals like DDT do to the environment.

It took place on the night of December 3, caused by water entering the MIC storage tank, a highly toxic methyl Isocyanate (MIC) gas from a pesticide plant which was owned and being operated on by the Union Carbide India. The gas was exposed to 500,000 people and caused widespread injuries and even deaths.
