The emperor Kammu moved Japan's capital in 794, this was from Nara to Heian-Kyo, but now it is called Kyoto. this all began in the Heian period, which is from 794 to 1185CE, around this time Japan made their own style of artwork, writing and culture instead of inhabiting China's culture. when Japan started to grow, the emperor started to lose power and become weaker, Daimyo started to take control of the countryside, they got samurais to protect their lands. the shoguns ruled Japan.

The War was a civil war between Minamoto and Taira. The Minamoto clan won the war meaning that Minamoto no Yoritomo became the first shogun of Japan in 1192, they ruled from Kamakura as the military leader, and they had established their first bakufu. this was the first feudal state in Japan, that had real power in Kamakura.

Minamoto no Yoritomo was the first person to become Japan's most powerful shogun in 1192. He created a military government in Kamakura. The emperor stayed in Kyoto with very little power, the Yoritomo was controlling the country, making the Kamakura Shogunate last 700 years.

1574 to 1600 was The Azuchi Momoyama period, this was when Japan was unified under the daimyo Oda Nobunaga and his follower. Toyotomi Hideyoshi. This was known for its wealth and its luxury, it had big castles like Azuchi and Momoyama this was replacing traditional temples.

when Toyotomi Hideyoshi died in 1598, after his passing Tokugawa Leyasu came to power, this is because the emperor made him the shogun, this had started the Tokugawa Shogunate. From 1600 to 1868 called the Edo period was very peaceful and prosperous, but still had a strict class system that isolated Japan form the rest of the world.
