Socialization Timeline

  • Outfit Decision

When I was about 6 years old I asked my big sister to help me pick my outfit because I idolized her. I proudly held up a Hello Kitty shirt and she looked at me and said "Ew, I hate shirts with characters on them". So she picked out this very plain outfit and I never wore any of my hello Kitty or Disney princess outfits again. The agent of socialization was family.
  • Moving Schools

When I was just finishing 2nd grade my mom told me we were moving. That was the only thing I used to say as a kid that we can't move. I had to completely switch schools and make all new friends and I'm so happy we did because I love all my friends that I've made. The agent of socialization is school.
  • Gym class

When I was in 3rd grade and it was my first year at my new school (Romeo). We were in gym class and I volunteered for a demonstration of a game we were about to play. At the end of it I had to shoot a basketball into a hoop from the 3 point line. My PE teacher told me not to stress about making it. I made the shot!! Everyone started clapping and I had a bunch of kids come up to me and I made a bunch of friends. The agent of socialization is peer groups
  • Back handspring

When I was in the 6th grade I made the middle school cheer team. I had my back walkover already and wanted to start working on my back handspring. I was getting spotted a lot and thought I was doing great. My friend at the time looked at me and said "Your not as close as you think you are". This set me back at first but then I pushed myself to do better and eventually (3 years later) I got it! The agent of socialization is peer groups.
  • Church

My family has never been religious so I've never really gotten to go to church. From a very young age I learned about God from friends and other family members. This year I got a boyfriend named Miles and his family is super involved in church and everything. He offered to take me with them one Sunday and I fell in love with it. Now I go every sunday and my relationship with God has grown immensely. The agent of socialization is peer groups.
