  • Signing of the Declaration of Independence

    The Continental Congress got together and signed the Declaration of Independence written by Thomas Jefferson. This document severed American connections with Britain and established America as an independent country.
  • Signing of the Treaty of Paris

    America finally won its freedom from Britain after years of revolution. This treaty made Britain officially recognize America as a country.
  • U.S Constitution Ratified

    Establishes basic rights of America and states that the government is meant to serve the citizens. Provided an outline for future governmental development.
  • Washington becomes President

    Washington took his oath in office after being elected America's first president. In his time in office, he set the precedent for future leaders of America and established America in it's early life.
  • Bill of Rights added to Constitution

    First ten amendments added to the U.S Constitution, clearly establishes rights of the people and states where the government is limited and restricted.
  • John Adams Becomes President

    As the second president of the U.S, John Adams had big shoes to fill. During his presidency, he signed the infamous Alien and Sedition acts, which are known today to be unconstitutional because of their restriction of people's rights.
  • Thomas Jefferson Becomes President

    A more economy-focused president, Thomas Jefferson made many changed to early America. Reduced debt owed to other countries by a third, established the Marine Corps, and supported growth and expansion westward.
  • Louisiana Purchase

    Under the presidency of Thomas Jefferson, 828,000 square miles of land is purchased from France, doubling the size of America and allowed for farther expansion. Also raised controversy on whether or not the president was allowed to personally make this kind of purchase.
  • James Madison Becomes President

    Known as the "Father of the Constitution" because of all of his work on it and the Bill of Rights. He helped to frame the rights of the people and define the government's purpose.
  • War of 1812

    Another war between America and Great Britain over the impressment of American sailors and trade disputes. It lasted 3 years for an American victory and the signing of the Treaty of Ghent
