    TR the Rough Rider at San Juan Hill

    Roosevelt led a famous charge up San Juan Hill which helped the US capture Santiago and win the war against Spain. This was important because it made Roosevelt a national hero and helped him create an image where he was brave, tough and patriotic, later that year he was elected governor of New York.

    Teddy Roosevelts First Presidency

    Teddy Roosevelt was vice president under President William McKinley. In 1901 when McKinley was killed Roosevelt was sworn in as President. It was significant because Roosevelt was considered the first modern President because he expanded the powers of the executive branch.

    In 1902 Coal miners in Pennsylvania went on a coal strike for better working conditions, higher pay and shorter hours. The strike went on for months which caused a coal shortage, this lead to President Roosevelt to intervene as a neutral party and helped both sides reach a fair deal. This was significant because it was the first time the federal government helped both sides rather than automatically siding with business owners in a strike.

    This act funded large irrigation projects to turn desert land into useful farmland. This was significant because it was a big step in the federal government developing natural resources in the West and it was one the first times the federal government showed responsibility managing natural resources for the good of the public

    Railroads had been giving secret discounts to bigger company's, hurting smaller ones, this act made that illegal. This was significant because it made federal regulations of the railroad stronger and ended unfair shipping. This was also important because Roosevelt supported the act as part of his plan to make business more fair and honest.

    The Northern Security company was a company that had a monopoly on the railroads. President Roosevelt wanted to break up the monopoly to keep business practices fair, his administration successfully broke it up and this helped show the federal governments power of corporations and showed that Roosevelt was willing to use federal power to break apart monopolies

    When he won as president it showed that the American people were ready for a president with more power. Roosevelt was able to become that modern president who used his power for reform and regulation as well as conservation and a stronger use of executive power.

    Yosemite was put under federal protection to stop logging, mining and development. This was one of the first times the federal government stopped in to protect federal land for enjoyment and conservation. It was also the beginning of the national park system.

    The Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906 was significant for establishing the first federal protection laws against misbranded food or drugs. This also gave the government new power to inspect and regulate food and medicine and it led to the creation of what would become the FDA.

    The meat inspection act made it illegal to sell adulterated or misbranded meat after he looked into the unsanitary conditions in meat packing plants and required inspection of livestock and meat products for sanitary processing. The significance of the Meat inspection Act was setting the federal standards for sanitary meat processing and ensuring consumer safety as well as laying the foundation for modern food safety and the creation of FSIS.

    The main reason for going was to collect animal specimens for the Smithsonian and other museums. He wanted to take a break from politics and do something he loved which was exploring and being near nature and wildlife. After his adventure he went back into politics.

    TR Runs for presidency in Bull-Moose Party

    When Roosevelt didn't win the Republican nomination, he formed the Bull Moose party which divided Republican voters. This was important because it was the first time a successful third party was made. It was also important because the Democratic candidate, Woodrow Wilson easily won when the vote was split.
