In 1527 Narvaez led a voyage to the Gulf of Mexico. Even though there wasn't any evidence that Narvaez and his men entered Texas their voyage increased other Spanish interest. Narvaez wanted riches. In 1528 they went ashore Tampa bay. Many of his mean were hurt or killed struggling through swamps. Narvaez disappeared when his boat washed out at sea.

Vaca was an explorer in the 1500's. He was captured by coahuiltecan Indians. After 2 years in captivity Vaca and 3 other men escaped and set off the along the coast to search for Mexico. They travelled from one American village to the next. In 1536 8 years after the shipwreck, Vaca published his own story in 1542.

Coronodo was a 30-year- old conquistador and commanded the largest force ever sent into North America. His expedition began in 1540. He wanted to find cibola "7 wealthy cities". Coronado planned a new expedition to find quivira and was unsuccessful. He returned in 1542

In 1598 Onate les more that 500 colonist across the Chihuahuan desert. He claimed an area for Spain. In 1601 Onates expedition began east to the Great Plains region. He renewed the search for Quivira. Onate and his men returned to Mexico on November 24, 1601 without any further incidents

La Salle, in 1682 expanded France's empire. He planted the French flag at the mouth of the Gulf of Mexico. He drained all the land by the Mississippi River to France. The land extended. He named this region Louisiana for his king. His expedition left in the summer of 1684, he moved and built a settlement Fort St. Louis. While he was marching through southeast TX. La Salle was murdered by one of his own soldiers.
