September 16th is Mexico's Independence Day, commemorating the "Grito de Dolores" on that date in 1810, when priest Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla called for rebellion against Spanish rule. This event marked the beginning of the Mexican War of Independence, which concluded over a decade later in 1821.
