Introduction
Travel and Tourism is the movement of people from one location to another for leisure, business, or other purposes. Travel involves the journey itself, while tourism refers to the activities and experiences people engage with at their destination. Travel has ben around for years. It was used for trading, exploration, and religious pilgrimages. Travel became more accessible in the 19th century as it became so popular to families and business workers. -
The Grand Tour
The Grand Tour involves young men who wanted to get closer to the queen and were encouraged to travel and study art, architecture and culture. They had key places that they would go to. These places being Paris, Rome, Venice, Florence, Milan and sometimes Athens. This tour would last about a year. -
UK Spa Towns
In the 1700's and 1800s, Bath and Buxton became popular towards locals and tourists. The history of UK Spa Towns began back in the Roman times when the Romans built baths around natural hot springs. These Spa Towns gained popularity due to their supposed health benefits! Today, these towns are extremely popular tourist destinations, they are celebrated for their historic architecture and wellness tourism. -
The Growth of Seaside Resorts
It was found the minerals that were found in the Spa's were also found in the sea. Tourist destinations such as; Brighton, Blackpool and Scarborough became very popular. Travelling there as a tourist was expensive but in the 1800s, London had steamboats for transportation. -
How Tourism Grew with the Railways
In 1830, building railways had started between big cities and by the coast. By the 1840s, there were 51 million passengers a year using the railway as a form of transportation. People began organising trips using these railways to the beaches, people also took time off work for this. Meaning tourism in the UK blew up. -
Historical Development in Tourism
The first travel agencies in the UK were established around the 19th century. Around this time, only automobile and small planes were in use. However, now that technology has become more advance over the years, planes are now much safer and more reliable. -
Vladimir Raitz
Vladimir Raitz was a strong figure in the travel industry, he was particularly known for founding the first package holiday company which was Horizon Holidays, in the UK. Raitz was born in 1922 and revolutionised tourism by organising the first charter flights to the Mediterranean in the 1950s. His approach made travel more affordable and accessible to the general public! -
The first holiday camp
The first holiday camp in the UK is called Butlins and it was founded by Bully Butlin. The first Butlin's Holiday camp opened in Skegness, Lincolnshire, in 1936. These camps were designed to provide affordable holidays for ordinary British families, while offering a range of activities and entertainment! Holiday amps such as Butlins played a significant role in the development of domestic tourist in the UK. -
The changes in leisure time and working patterns
Leisure time and working patterns have changed significantly over the years. The holidays with pay act was passed in 1938. In the 1950s, people would work up to 57+ hours a week, we now work around 37 hours a week. The technological advancements have further transformed leisure activities and has introduced flexible working arrangements. -
Development of package holidays
Packages holidays all began in the 1950s when Vladimir Raitz founded Horizon Holidays. This made international travel more affordable and accessible to the average person! The rise o budget airlines in the 1990s and the advent of online booking platforms in the 2000s further revolutionised the industry. -
Package holidays hit a rise in popularity
In the 1970s, the popularity of the holiday camps started to decline because people were able to board a plane and o abroad. People were starting to look for the hot sun and beautiful European beaches and cities. -
How the internet has changed the industry.
01/01/1983 was the official birthday for the internet, meaning people could have direct access to whatever they wanted. Nowadays, buying airline tickets online is the most frequent transaction. 7/10 people now use the direct internet with no travel agent to book holidays. -
Center Parcs in Sherwood Forest
European style holiday camps became popular after people had wanted to go on holiday abroad instead of going to a holiday camp. This caused all holiday parks such as Bluestone, Butlins and Centre parcs to all become extremely popular due to how they had changed their holiday parcs to give more of a 'holiday vibe'. -
The rise of budget airlines
In 1997, we saw many low cost airlines take off and land. We also saw that Ryan Air and Easy Jet expanded quickly due to them being the biggest airlines in the UK at that time. People began to have more choice of airline travel which made it more affordable for people. -
Package Travel and Linked Travel Arrangements 2018
The Package Travel and Linked Travel Arrangements Regulations 2018 were introduced in the UK to provide greater protection for customers booking holidays. Under the regulations, passengers on flights were allowed to clear information about their bookings, have cancellation rights, and get refunds. -
