The History of WCU

  • WCU is founded

    Western Carolina University (WCU) was founded in 1889 as a semi-public secondary school and chartered as Cullowhee High School in 1891
  • Cullowhee High School becomes Western Carolia Teachers College

    In 1929, WCU gained recognition as a 4 year institution called Western Carolina Teacher College aka "the Cullowhee Experiment"
  • The Cullowhee Experiment becomes Western Carolian College

    In 1951, postgraduate studies were added, and by 1953 we became Western Carolina College.
  • WCC becomes a regional university, WCU

    In 1967, WCC was designated a regional university, Western Carolina University!
