Timeline of environmentalism

  • Love Canal

    A ton of chemicals were dumped in a canal but after they filled it up, they sold it to make a neighborhood. Unfortunately, people in the neighborhood started experiencing birth effects, asthma, and epilepsy from the chemicals in the ground.
  • Minamata disaster

    There was a lot of consuming of fish, but it was found to be contaminated by chemicals in a plant called methylmercury. After the disease was realized by the government, they started paying attention to the levels of methylmercury in the water to ensure the fish was safe to eat.
  • Rachel Carson's Silent Spring

    Rachel wanted to show people how harmful DDT was to insects. She explained how many insects it can kill which where hundreds, killing animals’ food and hurting insects we need in the world.
  • Stockholm Conference

    When the participants adopted the Stockholm Declaration everything in the world started to go downhill for the environment. The water, air, people and the growth of the economy.
  • Endangered Species Act

    It serves the protection for wildlife, fish, and plants. The government wanted to create permits for activities like fishing. The act made it where species didn’t go extinct.
  • Bhopal Disaster

    3800 got killed from 40 tons of methyl gas that leaked. The company who owned the gas didn’t want to be to blame for it and never took responsibility. Crops started to not grow, and it made everyone in debt.
  • Chernobyl meltdown

    The nuclear power station would have experiments but one of the experiments was poorly done to where the workers had to shut down everything. Sadly, shutting down did not help and multiple explosions happened that caused a material to go around that was radioactive. Causing multiple deaths and injuries
  • Montreal protocol

    The government wanted to protect the ozone layer from any chemicals/ substances that would harm it. The ozone layer helps us with stuff like skin cancer from radiation so they wanted to make sure it was fully protected so no one would get hurt.
  • Kyoto protocol

    A treaty was signed and adopted to prevent less gases to the world. Considering their were multiple greenhouses they wanted to reduce how much gas that was affecting the world. Which would cause harm to our environment and crops.
  • An Inconvenient Truth

    The film showed to raise awareness of how much the climate has changed. They show how much carbon humans use, and it affects the world so much. But if we changed the way we lived and did not damage our resources so much it would be better.
