  • Minamata Disaster

    Minamata Disease is a disease coming from Methylmercury. The toxins were built up and increased in shellfish and other types of fish in Minamata Bay. This disaster resulted in deaths of humans as well as animals for over 30 years, while the government did little to nothing to prevent this epidemic. This was discovered in 1956. A second outbreak then continued to happen in 1965. It caused awareness in water pollution.

  • Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring Published

    Silent Spring really showed and expressed the dangers of pesticides in DDT. Large bird kills in Cape Cod were caused by DDT. The pesticide DDT entered the food chain which caused cancer and genetic issues to fatty tissue animals and humans. This brought awareness to pollution in water and also toxins in resources such as water and food.
  • Stockholm Conference

    This was the first world conference to make the environment a major issue. During this conference, they made the Stockholm declaration, which contained 26 principals and touched on environmental issues of international concerns.
  • Endangered Species Act

    This law is in place to make sure that anything the government authorizes, funds and carry out is not going to jeopardize the existence of any or all species or designated habitat of any endangered species. You are not allowed or authorized to take any endangered species, like import or export them anywhere.

  • Love Canal

    The explosion of the Love Canal happened due to an extensive amount of rain. Due to the explosion, Tress and Gardens in the environment were turning black and dying. Mothers were also giving birth to kids that were having birth defects and mothers were also having miscarriages due to this mascasuality. By the end of the month of the casualty 221 families had been evacuated.
  • Bhopal Disaster

    40 tons of methyl isocyanate gas leaked from a pesticide plant which resulted in instantly killing at least 3,800 people. This caused premature death for thousands more in years and months to come. The system they had to detect any kind of leaks, was out of order and not working and hadn’t been for 3 weeks prior, so around 1AM the explosion erupted and by morning there were dead bodies everywhere.
  • Chernobyl Meltdown

    This meltdown was the reaction of a flawed reactor. Radioactive chemicals were released in many parts of Europe during this meltdown. 2 people died the night of the disaster and many more died the following nights after due to acute radiation syndrome.

  • Montreal Protocol

    This is a global agreement to protect the Ozone Layer by limiting the production and consumption of ozone-depleting substances. They express how ozone depletion is a global problem.
  • Kyoto Protocol

    This protocol limits and reduces the use of greenhouse gases. All countries involved must meet their targets through national measures. This amendment was proposed by the secretary-general of the United Nations.

  • Documentary film An Inconvenient Truth released

    This documentary starred Al Gore (a past president) and the science between global warming and his own political life. Gore hoped that this documentary would bring light to global warming.
