Boo gets put away
Boo was never a bad kid. That is until he and some other boys acted up and got in trouble. Boo was convicted and the sherriff didn't feel right putting him in the jail so he was put in the courthouse basement. However Boo's dad convinced the officials to let him stay in his home to never be let out. The kids then asked Miss Maudie about the story who goes to say, "'You know that story as well as I do,'" (44). -
Dill comes along
Dill arrives in Maycomb. Jem and Scout met him at Miss Rachel Haverford's house. Dill tells them he came from Mississippi. Scout was very interested in learning about Dill and so was Jem. Although Dill seemed to tell big stories that no one believed. "Dill was a curiosity," (7). -
The bang and ripe
Dill and Jem have a plan to go over to the Radley's and see Boo. Scout hears about it and throws a fit and gets to join them. Little does she know the plan isn't well thought out. When they get there they see a shadow. "...as I tripped the roar of a shotgun shattered the neighborhood...him struggling in the fence, kicking his pants off to get loose," (53-54). -
The school yard brawl
Once the word about Atticus representing Tom Robison is around, kids at school begin to bother Scout about it. Cecil Jacobs being the worst, Scout wants to fight him. "'You can just take that back, boy!'... Atticus had promised me he would wear me out if he ever heard of me fighting any more..." (74). This was the begining of a very hard time for the Finch family. Atticus and his children were the most affected by the trial other than Tom and his family. -
The holiday brawl
At the Finch Landing for the holidays Scout once again gets into a fight. Her cousin Francis tempted her with mean names about Atticus. "'He's nothin' but a nigger-lover!'" (83). When Francis spit this out at Scout she tried to fight the urge to hit him. Although, with time her head blew steam out her ears and next thing Francis was crying. -
Jem takes on Mrs. Dubose
Mrs. Dubose, the Finch's neighbor, says things to Jem and Scout about their father representing Tom. These words anger Jem and caused him to "...not begin to calm down until he ha cut the tops off every camellia bush Mrs. Dubose owned, until the ground was littered with green buds and leaves," (103). Jem's punishment from his father was then to first appologize to her and then read to her everyday. Little did the children know Mrs. Dubose was having withdrawls and was very sick. -
Innocence is key
When Tom is moved from his past spot into the jail the mob comes. Atticus is there with Tom as he is sleeping. Jem, Scout, and Dill get curious and walk down to the jail to see what Atticus is doing. When they arrive they see the Maycob "mob" pestering Atticus. Scout's innocence ends up turning the mob away. "'I'll tell him you said hey, little lady,' he said. Then he straightened up and wave a big paw. 'Let's clear out,' he called. 'Let's get going, boys,'" (154). -
The verdict
The trial ends after the Jury takes the longest they ever have to reach a verdict. The verdict however isn't what Jem thought it would be, guilty. The kids don't understand why the Jury didn't do right. However, Miss Maudie says, "'...it's a baby-step, but it's step,'" (216). The reason for this is because atleast it took the Jury time to decide due to Atticus. -
A bottle of Coke
Not long after the jail issue, the trial is started on a hot summer day. Every thing seems to be going alright. However Dill becomes very upset due to the disrespect of the prosecutor towards Tom. Reverened Sykes told Scout to take Dill outside to get himself together. When they got outside the saw Mr. Raymond holding his bag of whatever that the town thinks is liqour. But the kids find out different when he offers Dill a sip, of his Coke. Raymond says he does what he does for his reputation. -
Down with the Ham
Halloween comes around and the school has a pagent. Scout is dressed up like a ham, and Jem decides to walk Scout to the school for it. On the way there they are scared by a friend. But on the way back they are attacked by Mr. Ewell. Jem gets beat up awfully bad but Boo Radley watched out for them and helped the kids home. Scout meets a very ghostly Boo, who asks to be walked home, "'Will you take me home?' He almost whispered it, in the voice of a child afraid of the dark.'" (278).
