    The first people to accualy discover America from Europe was the vikings. This was around year 1000 AD. They didn't stay for long.

    The need for cheap labor made it legal for plantation owers to get slaves. They wre taken on ships from Africa. Between 1700 and 1800, an estimated 250,000 slaves were taken to America.

    When the colonies wanted independence from the british crown, a war broke out over disagreements. George Washington became the first president of USA.

    In 1865 slavery was offecially abolished, but African Americans were not treated as equals in US.

    The supreme court decided in 1954, that the idea of "seperate but equal" was unconstitual, and segregation of public schools was no longer allowed.

    Many people walked in marches for the Afican Americans rights, and the most famous marche was in Washington in march 1963, when 250,000 walked to listen to Martin Luther King Jr. talk about his dream.
