    The beginning

    There is no specific date for the first "washing machine" as in history, the first to wash clothes were us. Clothes would be washed in a stream/river. People would use rocks/stones, wooden planks, and sometimes and when washing their linens. They would then twist the linens before hitting them on the wooden beater.

    Public laundary/Wash houses

    Roman's built public laundaries where they would bleach their clothes with urine due to the ammonia.
  • 1908 BCE

    Occupations

    Washers, laundrywomen, pressers, and bleachers became occupations.
  • Invention of the washing machine

    Jacob Christian Schäffer invented the very first washing machine.
  • The first to patent the washing machine

    Nathaniel Briggs was the first to put a patent on the washing machine. This included pouring water into a tank and pulling a lever to wash the clothes, then wringing them between two rollers.
  • Drum washing machine

    Invention of the drum washing machine, some machines by hand still remaining.
  • Electric washing machine

    In 1920 was when the electric machines were created, but only turning was electric, everything else was still by hand.
  • Automatic washing machines

    Finally in 1930 was when the washers finally became automatic. This includes having thermometers and timers.

    In the 1980s is when there were constant advancements being made on washers and how they operated.

    James Dyson invented the first washer with two cylinders so that the drum could spin in both directions, washing clothes faster.

    We're at a point in time where we can connect our phones to the washing machines. Washers can now get the job done, lots of the time better than our own hands can do.
